Every day, 10 teenagers commit suicide in Latin America and the Caribbean

In the world, 1 in 7 adolescents is living with some diagnosed mental issue, while more than 16 million (15%) of children and teenagers from 10 to 19 years old live with a mental disorder. In addition to the data revealed by UNICEF, on average 10 adolescents commit suicide daily in Latin America and the Caribbean. (The State of the World’s Children 2021, In My Mind: Promoting, Protecting and Caring for Children’s Mental Health).

The WHO states that Mental Health is one of the most neglected areas in public health, the indicators show this before the pandemic a billion people in the world lived with a mental disorder; 3 million died each year from alcohol consumption and one person committed suicide every 40 seconds.

In Ecuador, this year, medical and frontline staff who have worked in the care and management of COVID-19 cases, students, teachers, unemployed, merchants, housewives, and others have had their mental health affected.

It is time to give the importance and the necessary economic resources to Mental Health, life will be much more difficult for the following generations if we do not now prioritize what, as a society, we have been slow to prioritize.
