In Ecuador: the leading cause of death in teenagers is suicide

The National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC), through the technical report of deaths of 2019 reported that the first cause of death in children under 18 years of age is suicide.

In 2018 there were 268 suicides in children aged 10 to 19 years, and by 2020 the figure was increasing, experts assume that the reason for this phenomenon has its origin in the health crisis and the lack of effective public policies that help face this situation. (INEC)

Suicide in teenagers was already an alarming situation before the pandemic, but COVID 19 placed it in second place. During the lockdown, the necessary conditions were created to exhibit depression and an increase in domestic violence. During this time several psychology services were restricted, making it more difficult for minors to receive the emotional help required at that moment.

According to several scholars on this subject, in Ecuador the resources for efficient investment in mental health are not being distributed;  and it is vital to assume, from a public policy and health services standpoint, a macro-work aimed at modifying suicide rates.
