Student attempted to commit suicide due to bullying

A 10-year-old student attempted suicide, as a direct consequence of the bullying generated by his teacher and a classmate, because the child could not be vaccinated against Covid-19 for medical reasons, as the mother explained to the Prosecutor’s Office. of the minor.

“My son told me that he went up to throw himself off the balcony because he could no longer bear the pain of feeling humiliated during virtual classes, in which the teacher instead of stopping that action became an accomplice of it ”, the child’s mother told the media.

The case was exposed to the school director, who, according to the mother’s version, did not take any action in this regard, which is why the process is followed by the prosecution.

The situation is becoming increasingly alarming in Ecuador, a country where, according to Unicef ​​data, six out of ten students between the ages of 11 and 18 suffer from bullying. The pandemic did not stop bullying. According to a report prepared by the NGO Bullying Without Borders, 33% of children and adolescents in Latin America and Spain claimed to be victims of cyberbullying during the Covid-19 quarantine in 2020.
